“The Hostomel airfield was one of the first places Russian forces assaulted in their full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Its capture was critical to their ability to bring in additional troops and equipment to then quickly take Kyiv. In a powerful show of resistance, the Ukrainians managed to keep control of the airfield despite fierce battles, thus laying the groundwork for their expulsion of Russia from northern Ukraine a month later.

I visited the airfield, home of the legendary Mriya cargo plane, the world’s largest, which was destroyed in the heavy battles. A famous television personality was giving a concert for troops based there and I was enthralled with the remains of aircraft scattered around the field where the concert was held.”
