“The incredible mountains of cotton harvested every year were what drew me to Pakistan in the first place. Cotton is a very water-intensive crop to grow, and Pakistan is one of the most parched countries on the planet. How did these two facts square with one another? The search for the answer eventually led to my first feature story for National Geographic Magazine. On this day, as we were driving through southern Pakistan, we passed a cotton processing plant and simply stopped in. Pakistanis are incredibly friendly and hospitable, and they were happy to show me around in the golden afternoon light.”
