“I was in Pakistan to photograph a story about the Indus River, water from which is used to irrigate crops like cotton throughout Pakistan’s fertile Punjab region. I visited a research facility, where scientists are developing new varieties of cotton that can thrive in scorching temperatures and with minimal water - conditions already faced by farmers there, but which will continue to worsen as climate change brings additional stresses. There, someone had propped up this plant in a window, a perfect utilitarian specimen in the wavy late afternoon light.”
