At 102 meters, it is taller than the Statue of Liberty. As we emerged into an evening snowstorm, there was a lone car parked outside – a Volga, the top-of-the-line car in Soviet times. A light directed upward, to illuminate the Motherland statue, brought each flake into sharp relief while the driver lingered outside for just a moment before climbing in and driving off.”
