“The camp looked like a short walk away, but distances are deceiving on the Tibetan plateau. After trekking for 45 minutes across the steppe, crossing the infant Indus River along the way, we arrived at sunset. Gudong and her family were gathering the goats and sheep for the evening, and she quickly wrapped the horns of these goats together with a rope so they’d be more conveniently positioned for milking. They seemed completely used to it, but to me it was a remarkable scene as the sun set and the light cast a golden glow over everything in one of the world’s most remote corners.”
