“It was the fourth day of Russia’s open invasion of Ukraine, and like so many others I had fled Kyiv with my family. I found myself in the town of Kalynivka on Sunday morning and stepped into the church as the service was already underway. A helpful woman ushered me in front of the priest, who warmly agreed to my request to make a few pictures. The painterly light offset a palpable sense of grief and uncertainty, the prayers of worshippers slightly more urgent than usual.”
