“I was awoken before dawn by an air raid siren, followed by reports that a high-rise apartment building in Kyiv had been hit by debris from a Russian missile. I spent several hours photographing a disheartening scene as the sun came up and the next day I felt I needed to return. When I arrived, the police had severely restricted access to the area around the building. After being refused entry, I turned around and took this picture of a car whose windows had been crushed by debris. I can still remember the powerful feeling of almost instantly transforming my frustration into a more subtle observation with greater symbolism and nuance than anything I would have seen had I gotten what I wanted.”
